Health and safety

At the core of our operations is the prioritization of the health, safety, and wellbeing of our people. We continually strive to develop and implement best-in-class H&S processes and procedures, ensuring that they are rigorously applied throughout the entire organization.

We are dedicated members of the SSIP scheme and have earned prestigious accreditations such as CHAS, Acclaim, Safe contractor, and Constructionline Gold. To ensure the continuous improvement of our staff’s Health & Safety knowledge and performance, they regularly engage in comprehensive training.

To maintain the highest standards of safety, we conduct independent site inspections on all our sites without prior notice. The results of these audits are shared with our clients throughout each project.

We prioritize the safety and wellbeing of our staff. Therefore, we maintain an open-door policy that encourages them to ask any questions they may have, knowing that they will receive satisfactory answers.

Covid-19 safety

Currently, our primary focus is on safeguarding the health and wellbeing of our employees and visitors who come to our sites and offices.

  • Despite the significant impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on supply chains in the industry, resulting in a significant drop in production levels across most sites, West 1 managed to maintain full employment for all employees without placing any on the Government's furlough scheme. Our employees continued to work without any financial implications.

  • Throughout this period, West 1 has been able to sustain our operations and deliver results for our clients by implementing a strategy developed during the initial phases of Covid restrictions. We monitor and share the impacts on our supply chain in real time, allowing us to respond immediately to an ever-changing landscape.

  • At West 1, we have continuously implemented, reviewed, and developed procedures and policies at our own expense to ensure that our sites remain open and productive whenever possible, unless otherwise requested by our clients. We always adhere to government guidelines to ensure the safety of our employees and visitors.

  • In cases where site closures were necessary, we ensured that sites were fully secured in an agreed manner and monitored through weekly inspections. The results of these inspections were then reported to our clients in full, at no additional cost.
  • In the event of resulting delays that led to an extension of the contract program and additional preliminary costs, our clients were not financially impacted as West 1 absorbed all costs.
  • By implementing simple yet effective strategies on-site such as checking staff for symptoms when they arrive, increasing the size of welfare areas, conducting outdoor toolbox talks and inductions, and implementing increased monitored cleaning and hygiene, we have successfully operated at full capacity while remaining COVID-free so far.

We remain vigilant in adhering to the guidelines set by the Government and the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), while also making every effort to maintain our business operations as usual.
